This event will feature short readings from Alix’s book and insightful conversations with moderator Jen Borderud and Lynda Doughty, the Executive Director of Marine Mammals of Maine. There will also be a Q&A session where you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions. Afterward, meet the author during a book signing. A limited quantity of books will be available for purchase.

Alix Morris is a science writer in midcoast Maine. Her work has appeared in the Boston Globe Magazine, Smithsonian, Sierra Magazine, MIT Technology Review, Down East Magazine, and elsewhere, and she has graduate degrees in science writing from MIT and global health from Johns Hopkins. Her first book, A Year with the Seals, is supported by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
Lynda Doughty founded Marine Mammals of Maine in 2011. Born and raised in Maine, Lynda always knew she wanted to help marine mammals and has led marine mammal response organizations for many years, including providing care for thousands of animals and opening Maine’s first seal triage center. Lynda was recognized by the Portland Press Herald in 2014 as one of 10 Mainers to be thankful for and in 2021, she was named a CNN Hero.
Marine Mammals of Maine responds to stranded marine mammals and sea turtles in southern and midcoast Maine. Their team also cares for sick, injured and abandoned seals from throughout New England, studies East coast marine mammal populations, and educates the public about global marine mammal conservation.
